(Land of Mountainous and Rich ore Deposits)
The Andaman Coast is the land for mountainous terrain and rich ore deposts. Running parallel to the Andaman coastline are two important mountain chains-Phuket Range and Nakhon Si Thammarat Range.
• Phuket Range; the geology of this range, one of the southern sections of the cordillera from Tibet, is formed of mudstone, sandstone, and shale. On its southern end arise limestone and granite, the latter of which is a source of the tin ore mineral straddling the provinces of Ranong, PhangNga, and Phuket. Tin in nature is an ore in the shape of a hard rock known as cassiterite (tin dioxide) whose hardness is equal to quartz. Mostly gray to black, it turns white when scratched. It is resistant to smelting, and must be ground into powder and mixed with coal (carbon) before being smelted to produce pure molten tin.
• Nakhon Si Thammarat Range; the mountain chain consists of siltstone, mudstone, and purplish-ted sandstone, interspersed with limestone. KhaoLuang, the South’s highest elevation, is basically granite in composition.
